My Ultimate Guide to Kids Clothing

I’ll admit as a former stylist; I can’t help but apply my passion for fashion to my children. You can say that Liam and Norah have their own personal stylist, and because of that, we often get asked where I buy their clothing. As I’ve mentioned before in a piece I wrote for Camille Styles, I try to be conscious about the pieces I purchase since the kids outgrow the clothes so quickly these days!

Whether I’m buying kid's clothing on sale, secondhand, or as a big box consumer — I try to follow a few rules to make sure the clothing lasts and is easy to put together for multiple outfits. I know that one day they probably won’t let me dress them anymore, so I’m going to take full advantage of this while I can.

So, here’s a list of my favorite kids clothing brands, a bit of each brand, and a few tips to get the most out of your kids' clothing!

My Top 4 Tips Making The Most Out Of Your Kids’ Clothing

  1. Wait to buy the more expensive pieces until they are at least two. In the first year, they grow so fast! I have some of the cutest outfits we never go to because they grew out of them before I had a chance to pop the tag! Plus, let’s face it, they live in onesies for the first three months of their lives.

  2. Launder with care. I have been known to splurge on my kids' clothing, and because of that, I take excellent care of the pieces. That means having a stain spray you trust. I use the one by Puracy and detergent that is effective but safe by Dirty Labs. Lastly, I recommend hanging drying as much as you can because the dryer and high heat will make things fade faster than you want them to.

  3. Now, this might be contradictory to everything you’ve been told about buying your clothes but remember kids grow fast, so this rule applies to kids' wardrobes, not adults! Ready for it? Buy affordable basics and splurge on unique pieces that will anchor the look you are creating.

  4. Not sure how to put a look together? Find a brand or person whose style you want to emulate for your kids. See what themes they use to put an outfit together, then have fun trying it out on your own. If you are still struggling, try a service like Dopple that can send you drops of clothing monthly. Buy what you like, return what you don’t. I’ll start adding some looks to my highlights too!

My Favorite Accounts To Shop Secondhand on Instagram

Now, I completely understand that buying kids’ clothing brand new all the time is totally not sustainable, which is why I like to do a ton of shopping through Instagram. There are some incredible accounts out there that have options for every type of kids’ style, you just have to do a little bit of sleuthing. To get your started on your secondhand Instagram journey, here are some of my favorite accounts that I can always count on for a good find!

In addition to these, I will admit I’m a sucker for big box brands like Zara and H&M Conscious, though I try to avoid fast fashion as much as possible! With the holidays and Black Friday coming up, I hope you were able to find something amongst this list that resonates with you and your kids’ style! What are some of your favorite kids’ clothing brands? Are there any that I missed that you think I should check out? Drop them in the comments below. Otherwise, happy shopping, mamas!
